Paul Reimer is a commercial artist harnessing the old-world craft of blacksmithing to create positive change in communities around North America. From massive metal monuments to beautiful countertop art pieces, all of Paul’s artwork contains a beautiful contrast of the strength & rigidity of steel with the delicate, intricate and unexpected beauty of community.

Paul wanted to create a brand kit that would accurately reflect the style of his artwork and be attractive to galleries and customers alike while also showcasing his love of anvils – he REALLY loves anvils. The result is a small brand kit with vast amounts of flexibility, inspired by Paul’s work and the legacy and unique feel that it contains.

Paul’s signature move is making metal do things you didn’t think metal could do. Strands of steel twist in and out of each other in captivating ways and create beautiful organic shapes that feel painterly and beautiful. We wanted to find a way to capture this feeling. Our solution: A fully custom wordmark where all the intersections of the letters feel like they’re “twisting” like a piece of steel. It’s subtle, but it really sells that the characters are made of metal and have a charming tie to Paul’s work.

We paired this twisty metal type with a hand-drawn Anvil silhouette, and boom, we had something pretty special. All of Paul’s work is adorned with a “touchmark,” a signature of the craftsman. Paul’s touchmark is a lowercase “p” followed by an uppercase “R.” To further tie the branding to his work, we created a couple of “touchmarks” that reference that style to use for smaller placements. The marks feel right at home alongside Paul’s work, and that’s when we know what we’ve done is working.
